Vanity Clothing Stores
The word vanity refers to a rather extreme and often unsubstantiated view of ones own ability or attractiveness. Vanity was considered one of the seven deadly sins and calling a person vain is not considered a compliment. It is interesting that the word is so closely associated with women’s clothing. Vanity clothing stores are a national chain of stores catering mostly to young women and featuring very hip and stylish clothes designed more to flatter and adorn than for practical purposes.
Vanity Fair is another trademarked line of women’s clothing that also features this look. It can best be described as stylish and trendy. It strikes some people rather funny that a term that refers to conceit and a false sense of one’s own attractiveness would become such a commonly used description of female clothing. It is very possible that this is sort of a tongue in cheek sort of reference to the idea that many women become very vain about their clothing and how it impacts their image and appearance.
In fact, many stores are now featuring what is called vanity sizing. This is something many males would have a very hard time understanding. It appears that vanity sizing is where the actual size of an article of clothing is two or three sizes bigger than the size listed on the label. The idea here is that a woman, say who wears a size 14 dress, tries on a size 12 and finds it fits perfectly. She is elated and rushes to the cash register all excited that she is now a size 12. Of course, the article of clothing is actually a size 14 and she did not really lose two dress sizes simply by walking in the store.
This little fact does not seem to spoil the mood of the customer. The fact that this little vanity scam is working can be seen by the number of high fashion women’s clothing chains that are using vanity sizing on much of their merchandise. In some cases, the clothing stores have so much confidence in the “vanity” of their customers that they actually are quite open about advertising their vanity sizing offerings.
Still, Vanity Fair makes some really pretty and classy clothes. In fact, most men are quite content to let females shop at vanity clothing stores as much as they wish because, frankly, most vanity clothing does make them look good. In biblical terms vanity might be a deadly sin, but in the world of fashion it is really just a harmless and fun way to make females look and feel better. Sometimes, it makes them feel thinner too.
